Fresh Meat: NFL Draft Day 2 Reactions

Day 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft is in the books!

Check out Jason’s aka 2DrinkMinimum’s reactions to the players you can draft in Fantasy Football this upcoming season.

Pick Player Fit Grade Value Grade
#37 Bills Zay Jones A A
Reaction: Buffalo needed to put a pass catcher opposite of Sammy Watkins, while many thought this would have come day one but the Bills traded back in the first round one to gain extra picks (including an extra first in 2018).  Robert Woods replacement (averaged 50+ catches, 600 yards and 3 Tds in his 4 years) but I expect those numbers to be beefed up at least a little, even in his rookie year.
#40 Panthers Curtis Samuel B+ B-
Reaction: A do it all RB, wait I mean WR is what Carolina drafted in round 2.  Does this sound familiar…isn’t this what they did in the 1st round?  Blazing speed and allows Cam Newton to have more explosive weapons all over the field.  I wouldn’t be surprise if we see lots of pre-snap movement on this offense with McCaffery and Samuel moving around a ton.  Upside is capped at this point due to what the offense has looked like previously but maybe this is Coach Rivera’s way of keeping up with the Joneses in his division and looking to put up big point totals.
#41 Vikings Dalvin Cook C A
Reaction: My highest ranked RB pre-draft but this one hurts.  If the Vikings GM is sitting there in his war room and just wants BPA (best player available) then I get it.  Lat Murray and McKinnon are joined by a RB that brings the best of what each does together into one.  Vikings made a couple of draft picks to help their Offensive line (and hopefully some more on day 3) but not sure that’s going to be enough to keep Dalvin at the top of my rankings or even top 3.  (Insert crying sad face emoji here, hahahaha)
#44 Rams Gerald Everett C- C
Reaction: Think of this guy as a poor man’s Evan Engram (TE that was drafted by NYG).  First South Alabama player to ever be drafted, but that means nothing now sorry Jaguar Alumni.  Not a great blocker but not awful either with decent hands and doesn’t go down on easily.  Frame of 6’4” makes for a great target and his ability to box out in the end zone could help 2nd year QB Goff but wait didn’t they draft Tyler Higbee last year.  Son of A…   First South Alabama player ever drafted, but that means nothing now.
#45 Bears Adam Shaheen C C-
Reaction: So it’s “Baby Gronk”, geez just because he’s big and white…well he is 6’6” 278 and ran 4.79 40 (Gronk is listed at 6’6”, 265 and ran the 40 in 4.68.)  Really good hands but even at lower level competition (Ashland University) could be overwhelmed at times by smaller defenders pushing him off routes.  Played College basketball before the transition back to football.  Great hand-eye coordination from those basketball days, instant red zone and third down post up position target for rookie Mitchell Trubisky to look for or is it Mike Glennon.  Sharing time with Zach Miller this year but look for Shaheen to push for a more consistent role in year 2.
#48 Bengals Joe Mixon C B+
Reaction: Is this the most Bengals thing ever?  Three headed monster returns to Cincy, kind of like the Cook situation here with Mixon being a great mix of both of the backs currently on the roster (Hill, Bernard).  Will he successful on the field, yes.  How much will he be on the field is the biggest question I have.  Hill doubtful to return after this year so why not run the tires off him and allow Mixon to acclimate to the NFL and all they attention.  Even if I predict that Mixon gets the most touches in this back field it would be around 40% with Hill and Gio splitting the rest evenly.  RB2 is too much of a stretch in year one without injury to one of the other guys.  Year two though…it’s on!
#52 Browns Deshone Kizer B A-
Reaction: Last of the big 4 QBs to come off the board.  Cleveland and Head Coach Hue Jackson liked what they saw on tape to wait this long to draft a QB.  Hue is the QB whisperer, right?  For Kizer’s sake I hope that don’t throw him to the wolves this year.  Cleveland is building for the future and if this guy works out then this will be the draft that Browns fans will remember for a lifetime.
#62 Steelers JuJu Smith-Schuster C- B
Reaction: Do the Steelers know something we don’t or just trying to make sure they have the WR opposite Antonio Brown covered after Martavis Bryant goes Cheech and Chong again (I really hope that doesn’t happen).  I don’t believe this hurts AB but Bryant gets a down tick and Coates, poor Coates I think Bryant had it correct on Twitter last night when he said JuJu was basically Coates replacement.
Round 3
#67 Saints Alvin Kamara B+ B+
Reaction: So, how bad do the Saints hate Mark Ingram?  Bring All Day to New Orleans and I hear oh well Ingram can catch and it will be a good two headed monster.  Then the Saints go and draft a better handed back to fulfill that role.  Love the fact that a guy like Kamara ends up on a high-powered offense with Brees throwing for 5,000 yards almost every year and with the loss of Cooks, there has to be a decent number of targets coming his way whether he is used only out of the backfield or watch up in the slot a little this year.
#69 Rams Cooper Kupp B- B+
Reaction: I think the Rams needed help in other places but a tall slot WR can only help Goff this year.  Kind of feels similar to the Everett pick earlier in the day.  Receiving options on the LA Rams: Robert Woods, Tavon Austin, Cooper Kupp, Everett, and Rookies drafted last year (TE Higbee, WRS Mike Thomas and Pharoh Cooper).  Wouldn’t surprise me that Kupp challenges for the most targets this year but not sure that’s worth much.  The team still runs through Gurley…pun intended.
#72 Titans Taywan Taylor C- B
Reaction: Wow, is the rest of the league paying attention to Tennessee?  All the buzz about Cleveland and the 49ers but I really like the Titans front office moves so far.  Local kid (played at Western Kentucky…. close enough) that really has a knack for being productive and snare any balls thrown in his direction.  This a luxury pick with Davis being drafted #5 overall and the Exotic Smash Mouth offense still being in place.  Third round of the NFL draft and now dynasty rookie drafts as well.
#79 Jets ArDarius Stewart C B
Reaction: Decent value at this point in the draft even if I like a few WRs that get drafted after this spot.  Low usage at Alabama but productive when giving the chance and sub 4.50 40 speed.  Not sold on the fact of the NYJ needing a wide receiver and they already have Robby Anderson (probably drops him down a little) and pass catching RBs.  Who is throwing the ball again?
#82 Broncos Carlos Henderson B+ B+
Reaction: Hopefully working mainly out of the slot for Denver this year.  Can learn from 2 great WRs in Thomas and Sanders.  Sanders is already 30 and DT will be before this season ends.  Good move from the front office but I wouldn’t expect immediate return on investment from your dynasty rookie draft coming up.
#84 Bucs Chris Godwin B- B+
Reaction: There’s nothing like adding another weapon on offense for Tampa Bay.  Needs to be in the WR room and taking notes from Evans and DJax.  They drafted OJ Howard so I don’t believe there is enough to go around in year one or two.  4.42 speed and good hands with Winston throwing him the ball for years to come does sound nice, right?  See last sentence from Carlos Henderson.
#86 Chiefs Kareem Hunt A A
Reaction: Alright, so I am not a Ware enthusiast to say the least, but I love this pick. Definitely fits the Andy Reid mold in my opinion and wouldn’t surprise me if Ware is getting less touches each game from the jump.  Can’t wait to see 3 down production coming from Hunt.  Chiefs traded up to get the offensive pieces they wanted.
#87 Giants Davis Webb B B
Reaction: Good arm coming from a 6’5 frame and a spread offense at Cal should match up with in Coach McAdoo NYG system.  Giants have been talking about taking a QB for years and them like the rest of us don’t believe “Broke Jaw” Geno Smith was a great option even as the backup.  Who believes Eli has more than 2 more years as the Captain there?
#89 Texans D’Onta Foreman B B+
Reaction:  Head Coach O’Brein has mentioned that Lamar carried the ball too much last year.  Foreman is the instant number 2 on the depth chart.  Ten carries a game seems like a bit of a stretch at this point but TD vulture that Lamar Miller owners will love to hate each week.
#96 Lions Kenny Golladay B- D
Reaction: Had to do some homework on this guy because well, I had not heard of him. This is the reason behind the low value grade, definitely feel they could have waited on this pick. Big 6’4” frame is nice and that paired up with 4.5 40 speed.  I wonder if the Lions have done their homework here.  Kenny did go to Northern Illinois so at least that trip didn’t take the Detroit scouts long to get to.  Moves into first 4 rounds of dynasty draft able rookies.
#98 Cardinals Chad Williams B C
Reaction: Arizona keeps looking for WRs and why wouldn’t they with Fitzgerald on his farewell tour right?  6 foot and 207 pounds is a nice frame and in Cardinals fashion this guy has wheels with 4.45 40 speed.  Regurgitated same sentence at the end of Gollday’s reactions just above.
#100 Titans Jonnu Smith C C
Reaction: Only reason to make this pick is to groom into Delanie’s eventual replacement.  Don’t see how Jonnu is fantasy relevant for at least a year if not longer. 6’3 and 250 pounds with plenty of burst and 4.62 speed is hard to overlook potential.  Marcus Mariota must have really enjoyed watching this draft and seeing all the potential weapons he is going to have fun with.
#104 49ers C.J. Beathard D F
Reaction: Iowa Hawkeye Lynch’s first mistake in his young career as GM, even if he believes this guy can be helpful in the rebuild of San Francisco did he really need to move up to do it?  Good thing is that we won’t have to worry about seeing him start this year. Crap, I hope I didn’t just jinx that.
#105 Steelers James Conner B A
Reaction: Favorite story from the draft even though there have been some doosies.  If Conner still has more athletic ability coming while continuing his road back then HOLY CRAP!  Look back in a few years and might be the best pick in the draft.  I don’t want to predict injury or even suspension for Bell this year which means Conner is handcuff only.  This guy has special level talent.  Could Pittsburgh move on from Lev Bell after this year?
#106 Seahawks Amara Darboh B C
Reactions: 6’2 and more than 210 pounds with 4.45 speed looks great on paper but doesn’t match up well to film.  Has trouble with press coverage and didn’t do much of anything special when it looked like he could have broken one for 6.  Seattle needs some help in their WR corps so I can see the Fit but there are still better options on the board of pass catchers that he wasn’t needed at this pick.
